Job description

This is a hands-on engineering position focused on the intersection of physics, hardware, and advanced instrumentation. You will be developing systems that generate and manipulate particle beams, working directly with mechanical components, vacuum hardware, and experimental test setups.

You'll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team including physicists, CAD designers, and optical engineers to deliver robust, high-performance subsystems that meet stringent experimental and manufacturing demands. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to core technologies in a fast-paced, deep-tech environment-especially if you have experience with ion or electron sources, vacuum systems, or beamline instrumentation.

The role is based in Bergen, with occasional travel to additional engineering sites in Barcelona and York.

What You'll Do

  • Design, develop, and test high and ultrahigh vacuum (HV/UHV) atom beam systems
  • Lead hands-on assembly, integration, and commissioning of vacuum systems and related instrumentation
  • Create mechanical, optomechanical, and mechatronic designs using CAD software
  • Support beam characterization, diagnostics, alignment, and troubleshooting efforts
  • Work closely with system integration and optics teams to ensure technical alignment
  • Contribute to system documentation and participate in iterative design reviews

Requirements

  • MSc or PhD in Physics, Engineering, or a related technical field
  • Experience with high or ultrahigh vacuum hardware and instrumentation
  • Familiarity with systems for atomic, ion, or electron beam generation
  • Proficient in CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360)
  • Strong hands-on skills, including prototyping, system debugging, and experimental setup operation

Additional Desirable Skills

  • Knowledge of molecular beams, particle optics, or beamline diagnostics
  • Experience with optical alignment, laser systems, or diagnostic tools (particularly valuable for senior roles)
  • Background in precision instrumentation or semiconductor equipment development
